The Dragon Boat Festival – A Chinese Festival
There are different stories about the origin of this festival. One of the most well-known version says that the festival commemorates the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan is a very patriotic officer from the Chu kingdom. He loves and cares about the country and the emperor he serves. He knew that the Qin kingdom is going to kill his emperor and invade the country. He was very worried and advised the Chu emperor to stop this happening by taking several actions. The Chu emperor not only ignored his advice, he even exiled Qu Yuan to a rural area. The Chu emperor was killed and the kingdom was invaded by the Qin eventually. Qu Yuan heard the news and jumped into a river in despair, on the 5th of May.
” The 5th of May marks the Dragon Boat Festival in the Chinese lunar calendar (25 June 2020).”
The local villagers saw Qu Yuan, they raced out their boat to save him but it was too late, they couldn’t find Qu yuan. The people were touched by how much Qu Yuan loved his country. They then made sticky rice dumplings and threw them into the river, hoping that the fish won’t eat Qu Yuan’s body. That’s the reason why people eat sticky rice dumplings and race dragon boats on this day.
